Historical Fiction

What is Historical Fiction?
Historical fiction consists of books in which the setting and scene is set in the past, may have some real people or places, but the main characters and story are fictional. Many children gain knowledge about the people, values beliefs, hardships and physical surroundings commo to various periods. Also through historical fiction children can discover that in all times, people have depended on one another and that they have had similar needs.

How can you use Historical Fiction in classroom?
You can have the students do a timeline of the book they have read for the week or you can have each group read a book and they come up with their own timeline of what happened in their own books. I believe every child should like historical fiction because it's important information about the past, present and future. I know I will be using historical fiction in my classroom.

Contemporary Realistic Fiction

1. Come up with a Super Sentence Defintion of Continue Realistic Fiction?

Contemporary Fiction that everything in a realistic story consistent with the lives of real people in our contempoary world. The world realistic does not mean the story is always true. Super natural does not exist. Some the books that would be contemporary Realistic Fiction are: The Boxcar children, Romana The Pest, Curious George. The students are able to identify with characters their own age with similar and problems.

2. How can you this genre in your classroom?

I would use genre in a lot of ways in my classroom. I pick out one of my favorite books such as the "The Boxcar Children" We would talk about the story, then I would have the students do activities about the book. They could pick out their favorite character out of the book ,and write a about that character. I would draw a huge train and the students would come up with what the children had on the boxcar and add some of their favorite things they would want on the boxcar.

Poetry

Love
If you Love something
very very much...
let if go free
If it doesn't not return
it was never meant
to be yours
If it does
Love it
Forever
I enjoy this poem, because it was given to me by my mom. She gave me this poem to me because I had a broken heart... Til this day I thank her for giving it to me because it's so TRUE.

Modern Fantasy

1. What is Modern Fantasy?

Is literature that is set in the real world, but the author has altered one or more characteristics of everyday reality. It takes children into that time and setting into another world,to where they can be part of the story they are reading. Modern Fantasy also gives these five important rules of reading modern fantasy books which are:

  1. helps children expanded their curiosity,
  2. become observers of life,
  3. learn to be sensitive to rules variations within the rules
  4. open their minds to new possibilities.
2. Design (create) a unique activity that you would use in your classroom?

There are many activities you can you can use for modern fantasy. I really enjoyed the activity that we got to make our own masks of "Where The Wild Things Are". The activity that I will be using in my classroom is with the story " James And Giant Peach" I used to enjoy "James And The Giant Peach" story when I was growing up, so I figured my students will too.

We would read the story and at the end of the story we would make their own mural of their favorite scene of the story.

Activity Name: " James And The Giant Peach"

Directions: The students would draw their own mural of their favorite scene in the book. A mural is design that you make from free hand drawing whether it's on a wall or sheet of paper.

Steps:
  1. I would handout each student a white long sheet of paper.
  2. They can use construction paper, markers, colors, pipe cleaners, glue stick, pencil, stencils.
  3. Design a mural of their own favorite scene in the story
  4. Then we would hang the mural all around the classroom.

Traditional Literature

1. Give one super sentence definition of traditional literature?
Traditional Literature- Is based on children based literature where there is good and evil. These are the kind of stories that have been past down from generation to generation. Some of the stories that I enjoyed growing up are: The Legend of Indian Paint brush, Peter Rabbit and The Three Little Pigs.

2. How can you use Traditional Literature in classroom?
There are so many ways you can use traditional Literature in your classroom. You could have the students come up with new ending the story such as Cinderella or Snow white. It's makes the students more creative and thinks outside the box. They could also write their own play about the story.

3. Will you use traditional in your classroom why or why not?
Yes,I will be using traditional Literature in my classroom. I believe it gives children wanting to know what other children around the world read. There are many different variations of Cinderella . There are different things she loses in the different Cinderella stories from the different countries. It also makes them realize to set good examples for others. If they believe in there dream that have to set goals in order for that dream to come true!

Picture Books

1. What are Picture Books? When can you use them? How? Are there any limitations?
Picture books are - Communicate information or tell stories through a series of many pictures combined with relatively slight texts or no text at all. It also states that the illustration (pictures) are just as important or even more important then the text. Picture books can satisfy a wide age range of readers. You can use picture books from infant-adult years. You can read the different types of nursery rhymes helps stimulate oral language development when they are infants, toddlers. The wordless picture books encourage children to find objects in pictures, tell their own story, and write creatively this for young children 6-18 age. Picture story books are great for reading aloud to the students. I don't believe there is no limitations on using picture books.

2. How do you evaluate or select picture books? What is the processes? There are four major factors on evaluating a picture books.
  1. The child's age and stage of cognitive and social devloment.
  2. The way in which an adult has or has not prepared the child for an experience with a picture book.
  3. The child's emotional state of readiness.
  4. The number of times the child looks at the illustrations.

Always make sure you have the books on same topic of what you are teaching for that week. If you are teaching about transportation, don't add a book about bears in there. The students might wonder what bears have to do with transportation. Always keep your students in mind when selecting your books. The relationship between the words and the pictures when evaluating a picture book.

3. What are my personal views on picture books? No,like and why? Use or no use? Why?

I believe that picture books are great way to learn how to read. It all start from Infant through adult. Also, picture books helps children with their writing ,thinking, oral communication and vocabulary. I know when I was growing up I used to love to read the "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", "Brown Bear" and "The Stinky Cheese Man". Those were some of my favorite growing up. I do like picture books, it makes the child wonder what is going to happen next of the story. Yes, I would use picture books in my classroom. You as a teacher can do a lot of activites from picture books, for example: when we work in our home groups we chose 3 different picture books and how we could incorpate these books into activties. There are web activties, cause and effect and sequenced. " Ellas of Course we used web activity and " Some Pig" we used cause and effect and "My Aparon" we did sequence. I believe it makes a child start think of what happened in the story that they had just read or the teacher had read to them.

International and Multicultralism Literature

International Literature defintion says that body of books originally published in a country other than the United States in a language of that country and later published in this country. The are written in another language other than english and are later translated into English. 1. Help us connect us to potential friends around the world. 2. Teach us about the global neighbors and provide a cultural bridge to interal and external worlds of people far away. 3. provide cultural knowledge that goes far beyond the narrow coverage provided by textbooks or television 4. Relfects the culture and language diversity that is found in our classroom. Multiculture books are written in the United States and discussed about another culture. It's the children aware of the different cultures and religions of the children around the world. It's imporant to have international and Multicultural books in our classrooms because, the students can get sense of what books are out there. So oneday they can be able to do a book report, journal on types of these books.

Activities that I would do in my classroom with International and Multicultural

International
1. After reading the book, I would make my students write a journal stating what they learned from the reading.
2. I get my students to do a play so they could get idea of how felt leave in those times depending on the book they read.

Mulitcultural:
1.The students would have a certain child of anther country and they would have to do research on that country. So we do Children around the world project.
2.I would give them title of books and they would choose and do a bookreport of the book. I would let them read then start writing about the story and share it with their classmates.

Evaluations

Describe how to effectively evaluate books for children?
I believe that when choosing books whether it be for your classroom or home should be evaluated. Children are always asking questions about certain words or why did that happend? You the parent or teacher should be able to pull books that both girls and boys can relate to the subject or objective you will be covering. I know sometime last year. I had to subsuite for a first grade class. It was reading time. I had to read one chapter to the children of their book and was inform the word "smoke" comes up tell the children. People didn't know smoking was bad for you in those time of day. Make sure that the books you are picking out are properate for your child's age and maturity level. Does the book have strengths and weakness?

Why do Character and Settings anyalysis on children books?
The character and setting anyalysis are very important because, children become aware of what is happening in the story they are reading. The purpose of character and settings make the students become part of the story he and she are reading. There are many activities that you as a teacher can do with your students. You can make your students draw a web about the character and settings, write a play and write a story and draw picture of their favorite character and setting. It makes the children wonder what is going to happend next?? I know when I was in elementary school my favorite activity was drawing the web because it helped me with my writings.

Is the valued based?
Yes,I do believe the vaule is based. There are many books out there that are important values whether it is religion, education and help children during difficult times in their life.

Chapter 2

The History of Children's Literature is how children and family connect in one another in literature. I do believe literature and family go hand well to together. In the early years that what was about being with family and spending quality time together whether it be going to sunday mass or reading a great book. The Oral Tradition: Mainly states about the native americans. The hunters always told stories around the campfires and what had happened to them that day at family gatherings. I know when my family goes on our annual fishing trips we always have stories of my uncle, what would he have done if was here with us. Early Printed Books; were know in mid 1400's this would help children with their rhetoric, grammar and music for children who attended monaster schools. Their were many inventors during this time period such as German Johannes Gutenberg, Willam Caxton.. William Caxton established the first printing press 1476. Johannes discovered a method of using movable metal type such as the mass production of books and he was known for The Fables of Aesop. The Puritan Inpluence: During this era, children were learning at home during this period of time. Today some families do home school children and teach them how to read. I don't really care for it because the children are not around other children their age. John Locke: states that enviroment the child's mind at birth known as a "tabula rasa" blank. Locke said, "that children pleasure by reading Aesop's Fables and Reynard the fox". Charles Perrault was known for the tales of Mother Goose. I can remember reading those thales as child. I can remember going to my grandmother home and her readind those to me before bed. Jean -Jacques Rousseau believed that chldren should be led for a search for knowledge. He is also know for Emile which was published in 1762. Standards for Evaluating Young Adult Literature: is known for the victorian era. Many great authors were in this time period such as Charles Dickens,Mark Twain and Howard Pyle. Charles Dickens was known for Oliver Twist. Mark Twain was know for the Huckleberry Finn. I remember reading this book in my english class. Howard Pyle wrote about the Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. I still remember having to watch this movie in my english class well. During this time era many children are learning how to read and raised. It was hard growing up in this time period. You had differnt life styles living in this ear such as lower, middle and upper class. History of Censorship: This type of literature discusses about rasicsm, sexism and other forms of discrimination between the late 1960 and early 1970. Just last night I was watch Rosa Parks."She knew one day it would get better and she just believed in herself and didn't matter whether you were black, white or green as her grandpa said." Whether it be a movie or book it still states a story of how life was back then.
Authors during this time period were John steinbeck was known for Of Mice and Men. Now,I do remember this book in my english class,it was long but it was worth reading. Children and The Family in Children's Literature: How families in ables literature in their homes today and back then. The poor children were working hard and getting by with their education. The upper class was seprated from the families recieving instruction and trainning how to become as adults. It shows how families and children have changed since then. Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and Margaret Sidney's The Five Little Peppers. All of these books have stated of what's really important in family and responsibility not whether one family is poor or rich. My dad is five out of 18 children. Yes they went to school but for only short period time. They had to help my grandpa on the farm. He has come along way from being what he had in his childhood and building his own company he started 18 years ago which is in the oilfield business. So inconculstion I believe that this chapter has stated different era's of many children's literature . There are so many great books out there for children to read and learn about the different eras by so many great authors.

My Favorite Teacher

This one is hard one because I have two favorite teachers, but if I had to chose between them. It would probably be my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Brockman. She has always told me that you can do whatever you want,if you set your mind to it. One of her quotes is "There is never a NO". Yes,it has taken me forever but, I am becoming a teacher. She is one those teachers who is there to help her students. I can remember she had this game called the Challenge, you had to beat your challenge from the previous week! It didn't matter if you were a slow, middle, fast student she was there to help you make sure you knew that subject you were studying. I hope one day that I become the teacher that she was to me! I am so gratefull to have her as my second grade teacher.

Value

I believe reading is very important in child's life. It begins at infancy through adult hood. I know when I was child love to read to before going to bed. I believed a child should be read to everyday. I know I hated reading my AR book at school.I thought it was a waste of time, now I know why pushed us to read. There are eight different stages of development: infancy, toddler, pre-school, elementary and adolescence, young adult and middle age, retirment age. While a child is learning how to read they will be able to summarize a story, observering and classifing on what going to happen next in the story. There are also books to help children how to cope with different situations in life whether it be with divorce, new sibling, learning disability and death. There are lot of children feel like it's there fault because their parents got divorce or don't feel loved because new addition to the family. Since I majoring in Special Education there is book that I'm interested in reading which is True Story by Helen Lester.

What is Value? The mariam dictionary states that Value is- relative worth, merit or importance. What value is most imporant to you? and why? The most imporant value to me is Family. There are my rock. I believe without them I wouldn't be the person I am today. They have watch me succeded in all my endovars in life. Can you teach this value? I think you teach your students that family be important value in life. How? You can tell your students to write about their families and share with the classroom or they can draw pictures of them.
